When it comes to dual-clutch transmission, many people immediately think of Ferrari, Porsche, Audi and BMW. Overreacted? Ok, at least remembers the VW Jetta TSI and now the new Beetle, hitherto models more “accessible” to dispose of such technology in Brazil . Because Ford has just taken a step towards democratization of the double clutch with the launch of EcoSport Powershift, the first car to use the national resource – the next will be the New Fiesta. With prices starting at U.S. $ 63,390 (always with 2.0 engine), the Eco automated arrives as the best line option. See why.

What is it?

The Powershift transmission has the same basic operation of other dual-clutch systems: while a clutch controls the odd gears, the other takes care of the couple and the stern. Thus, the next gear is always engaged simply by changing clutch time – which can occur in up to 0.2 s in the case of a change in sport mode.

In relation to an automatic transmission common, Ford lists a number of advantages: box 20 kg lighter, trading at 1/3 of the time, delivers constant torque and even fuel economy 10% better. In fact, the Eco gets Powershift A note on labeling program Inmetro, with averages of 9.7 km / l in the city and 11.8 km / l on the highway using gasoline. In this automated version, Ford announces power 1 hp less than the manual model, with 140/146 bhp (petrol / ethanol). The maximum torque remained at 19.7 Nm at 4,250 rpm.

With six gears, the Powershift offers three modes of use: automatic (Drive), Sport and Manual sequential with changes made by + and – buttons on the handle itself. In sport mode the sixth gear (which acts as overdrive) is disabled, while the changes begin to occur at higher RPMs and reductions are more constant.

How to walk?

Soon to release the brake, good news: the function creep mode causes the car to move without you even accelerate (as in a conventional automatic transmission), which makes life easier maneuvering. And then we come to São Paulo and in walks of every day, a perfect condition to evaluate the new exchange.

In Drive transmission pleases, firstly, for comfort. Always chooses the exact gear for the occasion and has virtually imperpectíveis exchanges – you only notice that she climbed the march because the pointer tachometer falls. With this, there is leaps and engine response is more ready for when we need a stretched. Another feature is the low internal noise, since the exchange tends to work with high speed even at lower speeds, to improve consumption.

We arrived on the highway and in the limit of 100 km / h, the engine purrs at 2000 rpm in sixth gear. I interrupt the calm and Sport driving mode bottom floor, expecting a more abrupt transmission. That nothing. Quickly, but without hiccup, Eco lowers the engine speed to wake up and shows agility into overdrive. Performance seems little affected (if it was) compared to the manual version. Ford indicates 0 to 100 km / h in 11.4 s with ethanol, a number that, I suspect, is even better. Not to mention lower consumption, something that we will take the test in a clean future.

The only drawback of the Powershift is on account of manual exchanges. In exchange the little button, they are virtually forgotten. All though the Sport mode works so well that you do not really need to shift gears in the manual to get the desired reaction, but a car over $ 70,000 as this Eco Titanium would be good to have butterflies in direction – something that until the Fiat Palio offers Dualogic. But I think Ford is keeping that attraction for the new Focus.

In the end, the exchange Powershift works so well that whoever starts to seem antiquated Duratec engine is a little slow rise in turnover in relation to reductions in transmission speed. Is it too much to dream of the 1.6 Ecoboost (turbo and direct injection ) Europe? The Brazilian Ford says yes. What should happen in the future is the application of Powershift versions 1.6 of Eco, but an evolution of the Sigma engine with variable valve timing that is already manufactured here for export.

How much?

For the automated EcoSport would not be far from the FreeStyle manual version 2.0 on price, Ford has created an unprecedented 2.0 SE Powershift, for U.S. $ 63,390. It comes with interesting items like traction and stability control, plus the Sync entertainment system, but leaves out a simple trip computer and alloy wheels.

After the offer now jumps to the top Titanium Powershift with starter button, digital air and rain sensors and lighting, to R $ 70,890. The full model, which adds leather and side airbags, vai to R $ 74,590. Qustionada about the absence of exchange at Powershift version FreeStyle (precisely to greater demand for manual models), Ford says that the model can be incorporated into future line. Especially because there is a clear gap in price (and equipment) between SE and Titanium.

Even without getting in version FreeStyle would consider “killer”, the Eco Powershift is firm as the right option for those who want more jeep with the 2.0 engine, both in terms of comfort as efficiency. And that will more double clutches around.
